Cyanotypes
In these works, I use my own body to draw with light, using the 19th century technique of cyanotype printing. They are all life-sized. They are made outside when the sun shines, and then quickly brought in, washed in the shower to set the image.
The works began during lockdown, in a small urban garden space; a way to physically and temporally connect with the outside world and the elements, and negotiate the sense of claustrophobia and the body being within a confined space.
The practice developed into an attempt to explore and respond, very viscerally and phsycially, to poses and themes from art history that I might have previously viewed in a detached or objective way - perhaps in a gallery, a book or by drawing with pencil from a distance. These subjects included bathers, mythological figures, reclining figures, and caryatids.
The body of cyanotype works is a work-in progress. It is my intention to continue to experiment with displaying them in groups, in larger spaces, and in exterior urban contexts.
